Research Innovation in Science Enrichment University (RISEUP) Hybrid Program – Iowa State University

The 2023 RISE UP (hybrid) Program offers Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and Marshalltown Community College (MCC) the opportunity to conduct research in their field of study with faculty mentors and research scientists at Iowa State University.  

IINSPIRE LSAMP/RISE UP Program Requirements/Expectations: 

  • Attend program orientation on Tuesday, June 6th, 9 am-noon 
  • Commit to AT LEAST 20 hours per week for virtual and in-person research training during the summer term (June 5th – July 28th, 2023).  
  • Be on the Iowa State University Campus from 9-5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer term (June 5th – July 28th, 2023). 
  • Attend the Virtual Introduction to Research Course and complete all assignments (meets Monday afternoons) 
  • Participate in weekly seminars on the Iowa State Campus (Tuesday afternoons). 
  • Construct your research poster as a part of the program. 
  • Present your research poster at the IINSPIRE LSAMP Summer Symposium, Iowa State Summer Symposium, and/or the IINSPIRE LSAMP Annual Conference.

Rolling notification schedule pending availability of funds:
April 3: first round of offers 
April 17: second round of offers
May 1: third round of offers
May 15: fourth round of offers 

RISE UP Student Application 

Criteria  to be a RISE UP participant or Program Eligibility: 

  • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States 
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.7 overall and GPA of 3.0 and higher in major preferred 
  • No prior research experience if new to the RISE UP program 
  • Coursework in STEM field/discipline 
  • Member of an underrepresented group, including Black or African American, Alaskan Natives, American Indian, Hispanic American, Native Hawaiian, and Native Pacific Islander 
  • Must be able to commute to Iowa State University during the program 

Benefits  of participation in the RISE UP program include: 

  • Join a cohort of Iowa State and Community College research scholars, mentors, faculty, and administrators who will help you excel 
  • Participate in mentored research on the Iowa State Campus 
  • Participate in regular professional and educational development activities 
  • Make Progress on the IINSPIRE LSAMP Undergraduate Research Certificate.
  • Present your research at professional conferences and symposia 
  • Build your resume 
  • Prepare for and learn about graduate school
